Baddow House: A Heritage Christmas on the Mary River
In Time for Christmas
Buyers who act now can be settled at Baddow House before Christmas, subject to contract and settlement terms. Picture garlands on the cedar staircase, fires lit in the fireplaces, a festively decorated tree beneath the five-metre ceilings, and candlelight in the drawing rooms. Few homes in Queensland suit a traditional Christmas celebration as well as Baddow House.
A Home for Generations
Restored to its former grandeur, Baddow House is a prominent 1883 Georgian-style residence listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. Built of rendered triple brick, it sits on almost two acres of established riverfront grounds. There's approximately 910 sqm under roof, with formal and informal living rooms and five bedrooms. It serves as a family home and also has potential as a venue for tourism, weddings, or boutique accommodation (STCA).
Maryborough pioneer Edgar Thomas Aldridge commissioned the house, and English-trained architect Willoughby Powell designed it without compromise. It stands high above the Mary River, next to the original town site, and is widely regarded as the Fraser Coast's most significant 19th-century residence. Wide verandahs wrap around the house. Inside, the house features original cypress and hoop pine floors, solid red cedar doors, a cedar staircase, and restored decorative detail. The rooms include grand-proportioned drawing rooms, a country kitchen, a library and an office, and a separate garden studio. Neighbouring it are 74 acres of heritage-listed Crown parkland, so Baddow House feels worlds apart.
The gated grounds have curated gardens, brick paths, vine-covered arbours, a water-lily canal pond, jacarandas, poincianas and rolling lawns. Since 2000, it has had only two long-term owners, and it now awaits its third.
